These times seem like a particular litmus test on the dream that keeps Silicon Valley alive. Where once is was “make it up in volume,” to soon become “user growth at all costs,” and now every dumb business model like Movie Pass is based on the idea that “data is the new oil” or that “the best lose money for years.” From Uber to Lyft, WeWork to BlueApron, Birchbox to Glossier, or even Tesla to Pinterest to Peleton, it seems that making money isn’t really the goal of startups....

I have some bad news, then: Marc Levoy, a pioneer in computational photography and the most prominent researcher behind the Pixel’s camera, left Google in March, according to The Information. His LinkedIn page confirms he is no longer with the company. Levoy helped lead some of the Pixel’s groundbreaking features, including HDR+, Portrait Mode, Super Res Zoom, and Night Sight. And oh yeah, he’s also the guy responsible for the tech behind Street View in Google maps, which started out as a Stanford project dubbed CityBlock....

But the amount of hype that Clubhouse has generated in its relatively short lifetime is oddly disproportionate to the number of users it had acquired. Okay, so Skyward Sword isn’t everyone’s favorite Zelda game, largely because of the extensive use of motion controls and sparse overworld. I’m sure some would rather see another series title make its way over to the Switch. But as someone who loved that game — including what I considered to be excellent motion controls — I’m pretty hyped, specially as Nintendo says that the Switch’s processing power and Joy-Cons will enable more accurate and reliable motion controls....

The difference is that the metaverse allows us to immerse a version of ourselves as avatars in its environment, usually through augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR), which people are and will increasingly be able to access using tools like VR goggles. While it all seems very exciting, a curious lawyer like me is inclined to ask: who or what governs the metaverse? I have been playing a lot of great games lately. Apex Legends and Forza Horizon 4 — along with sprinklings of Damsel, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, and Mini Motorways — make up a fairly balanced diet.
